George St. John may be from Salt Lake City or historic Virginia or Andromeda. Before he left here for San Diego earlier this year, he recorded a little gem. “This fucking epic,” as he describes it, “is serious business about secret societies and stuff, rituals that I don’t even know about and
space, and it is a good example of why songs should have a melody, instead of what this song has.” As usual, he is too modest. The song is like a tune by a Devo from another galaxy. And “The Vexations” are none other than St. John accompanying himself on guitar, drums and what sounds like otherwordly synthesizer. His album on Soundco Records ranges all over the stylistic map. As a Virgo, he is always focused on the details. He isn’t content just to learn to play an instrument inside and out, but also has to know its history. Once he played a solo show of all Go-Gos covers on a penny whistle accompanied only by drum machine. He also played in Get Stakerized! for a short while, and Bad Apple. —Stakerized!
