Starmy are veterans of rock, and the diverse members of the band have had their share of grueling rock battles: fans insisting that they play that one fantastic song just once more, opening for Lollapalooza 2003 in Salt Lake, being recognized by local publications as incredible, etc. For example, they were featured on City Weekly’s cover for the annual SLAMMYs readers’ choice awards in 2002 in honor of their disc Dead Ready, which was voted “Best Local CD” by City Weekly readers, and they were voted “Best Rock Band”
of the year in 2003 in the same contest. For the first time ever, I heard few people complaining about that year’s selection. Yet despite their success, they still play great music and eschew rock-star attitudes. Despite what I regularly encounter at concerts, Starmy fans
dance. The music is impossible to resist. Stoic and staid hipsters can be seen, shockingly, shaking the proverbial it when Starmy breaks out with one of their mildly sinister yet poppy, garage-y songs.
