Erosion is the Susan Lucci of the local music scene: ubiquitous yet never fully getting their due; they have been voted best local band by City Weekly readers, but never sent to SXSW. They finally eroded altogether after seven years together,
playing their last gig on Nov. 21, 2003. Erosion encapsulated nearly every style of local music, from garage to psychedelic to rockabilly to altcountry, sometimes in the space of one song. Singer Jon Bean’s stage persona combined a desperate fury with a glamorous self-assurance that had fans of both genders wrapped around his finger. Bean, whose cover art graced their albums, is that rare combination of rock musician and poet. If you missed the three-hour onslaught, it was one of the greatest evenings of local music in Salt Lake history. Luckily, they leave us three CDs as a tremendous legacy. Re: “The Monster”—Ozzy called, he wants his riff back. It’s too late; Erosion has taken it and made it their own in a pile driver of a song. —Stakerized!
