DAN MORLEY: Vocals, guitar, bells, bass clarinet & everything else
The first time I met Dan Morley was when I was going to interview his old band Crapshoot in the late ’90s. They all entered the room in business suits with sawed-off shotguns, and by the end of the night I was face down in the gutter somewhere in South Salt Lake, too drunk to care. Let me tell you, Dan Morley is one crazy motherfucker. Once I saw him in a ski mask taking everyone in Burt’s
Tiki Lounge hostage, and he’s probably the only one who could pull that off. But he’s also one of the most talented and long-toiling local musicians, having played in bands Sugarpants, Bay of Pigs with former SLUGpublisher Gianni Ellefsen, punk legends Skabs on Strike and many others. Lately, he has also dabbled in filmmaking; watch for local screenings of his Atonement Box. “Stealing Claire’s Prescription” is an amazing track, full of quirky jazz instrumental touches like the kind Tom Waits used to slip into his songs before he became a parody of himself. And yes, he is playing all the instruments, including bass clarinet. Lounge jazz under the influence of pilfered pharmaceuticals; just what the doctor called for. —Stakerized!
